Forest Certification
The American Tree Farm System (ATFS) forest certification is recognized internationally by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). ATFS certifies landowners using the American Forest Foundation’s Standards of Sustainability for Forest Certification. These standards require third party certification audits.
What is MFC’s connection to the ATFS?
Milliken Forestry Company (MFC) has chosen the ATFS system because it provides the most assessable and cost effective certification system. MFC is an independently managed group certification organization recognized by the American Tree Farm System (ATFS).
How can landowners benefit from ATFS certification?
The ATFS provides an excellent source of information and expertise for landowners to find answers to questions and stay informed of technology and market changes. Private landowners who are certified under the ATFS are well-positioned to benefit from the future market advantages of certified wood, sale of bio-fuels, and carbon offset trading. In addition, landowners receive public recognition for practicing sustainable forestry, get the protection of agricultural exemption status, and are able to participate in environmental programs.
The ATFS provides a platform and a voice for family forest owners in national and state affairs. The ATFS National Public Affairs Committee sets priorities and organizes education and lobbying efforts in support of policies that advance sustainable forestry on family-owned forests.
