What is Forest Management?

Milliken Forestry Company provides long-term forest management for clients throughout the Southeast.  Oftentimes people ask us, “What is forest management exactly?” and “How can having a forest management plan help me financially?”

Forest management entails examining and analyzing both the assets of a piece of land as well as the goals of the landowner, and developing a plan to most effectively manage the land’s assets to meet these goals.  Having a strong forest management plan provides owners with knowledge of potential  cash flows and is the foundation of profitable forest investments.

Milliken Forestry’s approach to Forest Management

Milliken Forestry manages timberland ranging from small acreages owned by individuals to large landholdings owned by institutions.  Milliken listens to landowners’ objectives and presents alternatives to reach these objectives.  By applying hands-on management tailored to each landowner’s resources, Milliken Forestry is able to maximize the assets, value and rate of return of all its managed acreage.  We integrate forest and wildlife management practices and use our knowledge to meet or exceed landowner expectations.

What are the advantages of having a Forest Management Plan?

In general, having a forest management plan enables landowners to understand the process that will be followed to achieve their objectives.  Due to the recent demands of those who purchase forest products (saw mills, paper companies, etc.), forest certification has come into the forefront of importance.  In order for timberland to be certified, a written forest management plan must be prepared by a trained forester.

Private landowners who are certified are well-positioned to benefit from the future market advantages of certified wood, carbon offset trading, and the sale of bio-fuels.  Additionally, landowners receive public recognition for practicing sustainable forestry.  They also get the protection of agricultural exemption status and are more likely to be invited to participate in environmental programs.

While some landowners require formal management plans, budgets and operations, others favor a more flexible approach to forestry management. Our consulting foresters have decades of experience that enable them to effectively assist you with a range of forest management services.
